Why this period and asset

February 2021 was a time when so-called innovation and high-growth themes were extremely overheated. Amid low-rate liquidity, many names had risen sharply on future-growth expectations alone, and right afterward, in the rate-hike phase, these growth-heavy ETFs fell by a very large margin. It squarely shows the overheating of theme ETFs and what followed.

Interpreting the result

This shows the path of entering at a peak when a theme was overheated. The maximum drawdown was very large, and the stretch underwater and recovery period ran long. With higher concentration in a specific theme than an index asset, the decline and delayed recovery showed up more strongly. The key is whether you could actually withstand a large drawdown and long recovery, and it should not be generalized that a specific theme is bound to recover.

Caveats & limits

This result is a hindsight simulation of one specific peak and does not guarantee recovery. Theme and high-growth ETFs, being concentrated, can show large drawdowns and delayed recoveries. It ignores taxes, fees, and currency effects. As a dollar asset, the outcome in won terms shifts with the exchange rate. The past does not guarantee the future.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying at a peak always mean failure?

Buying at a peak raises the risk of a large drawdown and a long stretch underwater. Theme-concentrated ETFs in particular can take a long time to recover after overheating, and recovery is not guaranteed.

Since it recovered in the end, can't you just hold on?

The stretch underwater and delayed recovery were long, and theme-concentrated assets are not guaranteed to recover. Generalizing 'just hold and it recovers' is risky.

Is a lump sum or monthly investing better?

In a long decline, monthly investing can lower your average cost, but if the theme itself does not recover, both approaches carry loss risk. Neither is always superior.
