What if you started KOSPI DCA around Parasite's Oscar win?
This uses real data to show what would have happened if you had invested KRW 300,000 a month in the KOSPI index ETF (KODEX 200) starting around February 2020, when the film Parasite won Best Picture. We honestly examine the DCA path, including the COVID crash right after the start.
⚠️ Know the risk first
Right after the DCA start, the COVID crash sent the KOSPI plunging. Early on the value fell below contributions, and the result only holds if you kept investing without stopping.
What happened that day
In February 2020 (Feb 9 local time), Bong Joon-ho's film Parasite became the first Korean film to win Best Picture. Just weeks after this milestone, the COVID pandemic crashed the KOSPI in March 2020.
Why this date
Since exact lows and highs are only known in hindsight, we use a memorable event (Parasite's win) as a DCA-start milestone, computing 'what if you had invested steadily from around then.'

Why this period and asset
On February 9, 2020 (local time), Bong Joon-ho's film Parasite became the first Korean film to win Best Picture, drawing global attention. Just weeks after this memorable milestone, the COVID pandemic crashed the KOSPI to 1,439 in March 2020. It's a period that 'began with good news but immediately met the worst crash.' It shows how dollar-cost averaging passes through such a crash.
Interpreting the result
DCA invests the same amount each month, so in a downturn like the COVID crash right after the start, you actually accumulate more units at lower prices. Read the total contributed, final value, and maximum drawdown below together. Early in the crash, the value below your contributions would have been frightening, but if you kept going steadily, the low-priced units bought during the recovery may have contributed to performance. Still, this rests on 'if you kept investing without stopping.'
Caveats & limits
DCA is no magic that removes losses. If the index falls or stagnates for a long time, DCA also endures long loss periods. Over this span the KOSPI passed through both the COVID crash and later corrections, with stretches where the value fell below contributions. Always review the maximum drawdown and loss periods. Figures use adjusted close and exclude trading fees and taxes (in KRW, as a domestic stock), and past results do not guarantee the future.

Frequently asked questions
Why use Parasite's Oscar win as the start point?
Exact index lows or highs are only knowable in hindsight and can't justify timing. Instead we use an event everyone remembers (Parasite's win, February 2020) as a start milestone, computing 'what if you had invested steadily from around then.'
It met the COVID crash right after starting — is the result OK?
DCA buys more units for the same money in a downturn. So a crash right after the start isn't necessarily bad, and low-priced purchases can contribute during the recovery. Still, early in the crash the value below contributions would have been hard to endure.
Does DCA mean no losses?
No. If the index falls or stagnates for long, DCA also suffers losses. Always check the maximum drawdown and loss periods in this page's metrics. DCA reduces timing pressure but does not remove losses.
Are FX and taxes reflected?
Trading fees and taxes are not reflected — figures are pre-tax, in KRW as a domestic index. This page only shows historical data and recommends no product.
